17/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – Faced with the intensification of fighting and massive human rights violations in Ethiopia after more than a year of conflict between government forces and rebels in Tigray, the Heads of State or Government of the EU27 reiterated on Thursday 16 December their concern and their support for the African Union in getting the warring parties to lay down their arms. “The European Council continues to follow closely the situation in Ethiopia and fully supports the mediation efforts of Mr Obasanjo, High Representative of the African Union”, the adopted conclusions state. The text reiterates the EU position formulated on 4 November: call for an unconditional ceasefire, an inclusive and transparent national dialogue between the parties to the conflict, full humanitarian access, and protection of civilians (see EUROPE 12826/5).
