17/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission has allocated an additional €21.5 million in humanitarian aid to countries in the Horn of Africa (southern and central Somalia, eastern and northern Kenya) to support the region, which is facing one of its worst droughts in decades. “This additional funding will strengthen emergency water supplies, cash assistance, food and nutrition assistance, and health care services”, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. Of the total amount allocated, €18.5 million will go to Somalia and €3 million to Kenya. Currently, six million people have difficulty accessing water and food, and acute malnutrition, particularly among children under five, is rampant, the European Commission says. (MB)
