24/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – The local and regional elections held on 21 November in Venezuela were organised “in better conditions” than in previous elections, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday 23 November. Josep Borrell cited the participation of “the majority” of political parties and the composition of the National Electoral Council, “the most balanced of the last 20 years”. However, he noted “structural deficiencies”, relayed the same day by the EU Election Observation Mission (see EUROPE 12812/16), such as “arbitrary political disqualification of candidates, unequal access to the media, and the extensive use of State resources during the electoral campaign”. The opposition to the Maduro regime won three of the country’s 23 regions. More information (in Spanish): https://bit.ly/3nPLVao (MB)
