MEPs adopt 2022 budget, up 1.5% compared to 2021

The European Parliament adopted on Wednesday 24 November, with 550 votes in favour, 77 against and 62 abstentions, the EU budget for 2022, which was immediately signed by the President of the institution, David Sassoli (see EUROPE 12833/12).

The total level of commitment appropriations in 2022 is set at €169.5 billion, which represents an increase of 1.6% compared to 2021. The amount of payment appropriation increased to 170.6 billion, or +1.5% compared to 2021.

Parliament obtained a total of €479.1 million for its priorities, in addition to the draft budget plan presented by the European Commission, including €100 million for Horizon Europe

Colleagues, the outcome of the conciliation is a great success”, said rapporteur Karlo Ressler (EPP, Croatia) in the plenary debate the day before. Mr Ressler admitted that it was not possible in these negotiations to “commit on the financing costs” of the EU’s economic recovery instrument for the coming years. “This is something that will obviously have to be discussed next year as well”, according to the rapporteur.

Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn said that additional amounts have been allocated to the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, including €20 million for the resettlement of Afghan refugees. The Integrated Border Management Fund has been increased by €25 million, to finance measures on the border with Belarus.

On 23 November, the EU Council formally approved the agreement on the 2022 budget.

Budget for 2021. Parliament also adopted corrigendum budgets five and six for 2021.
