23/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – During the plenary session of the European Social Dialogue Committee for Sea Fisheries that was held last week, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) and Europêche adopted a joint resolution (https://bit.ly/3HMEFUP ) establishing benchmark principles that aim to better regulate the proliferation of sustainability labels certifying social conditions aboard fishing vessels. The intention is to avoid ‘social-washing’ labels and to stress the importance of ILO ‘Work in Fishing’ Convention C188 as guardian of human and labour rights of fishers at sea, which cannot be replaced or substituted by private systems. Social Partners agreed on the fundamental principle that private labels can never fall short of the internationally recognised social standards set in ILO Convention C188. (LC)
