Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to meet on margins of Eastern Partnership Summit

European Council President Charles Michel proposed to organise a meeting in Brussels between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the margins of the Eastern Partnership Summit on 15 December, during telephone calls with both men on 19 November.

The leaders have agreed to meet in Brussels to discuss the regional situation and ways of overcoming tensions for a prosperous and stable South Caucasus, which the EU supports”, the EU Council said in a statement on the evening of 19 November.

During the telephone calls, the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders also agreed to establish a direct communication line, at the level of respective Ministers of Defence, to serve as an incident prevention mechanism, the EU Council added.

Mr Michel had already met with the Azerbaijani President and the Armenian Prime Minister on 16 November.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on 16 November to a ceasefire after border violence (see EUROPE 12834/23). (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
