MEPs Vladimír Bilčík (EPP, Slovakia), Thjis Reuthen (S&D, Netherlands) and Daniel Freund (Greens/EFA, Germany) recalled, on Thursday 4 November, the importance for Montenegro to pursue reforms.
“We see Montenegro’s future in the EU, but the work that remains to be done must be done”, Mr Freund stressed at a press conference after a special session of the Montenegrin Parliament, during which recommendations made by the first citizens’ assembly on the fight against corruption were presented.
“Reforms must move forward”, Mr Reuthen said, adding that this would make Montenegro better, with a better judicial system and greater prosperity.
Mr Bilčík explained that the EU delegation had participated in the special session to show its commitment and support for Montenegro’s European path.
He said he hoped that the suggestions made by a group of citizens concerning the fight against corruption, the improvement of public institutions and the increase of confidence in these institutions would be followed up on.
Montenegro has opened all its accession negotiation chapters to the European Union (see EUROPE 12815/11). (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
