14/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 14 October, the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) and Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) adopted the draft report on “Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation” (SLAPPs) (see EUROPE 12811/19). The text, which was tabled by Tiemo Wölken (S&D, Germany) and Roberta Metsola (EPP, Malta), was approved by 63 votes to 9 with 10 abstentions. It contains a series of measures at European, national and international level to combat unfounded prosecutions or legal actions (injunctions, freezing of assets, etc.) against journalists or NGOs where the sole aim is to prevent the exposure of fraudulent practices.
