European Commission expects EU wine production to fall by 13%

According to harvest estimates provided by the Member States, EU wine production in 2021 (2021/2022 wine year) is expected to be 147 million hectolitres (hl), which represents a 13% decrease compared to the 2020/2021 wine year, the European Commission said on Tuesday 12 October.

Adverse spring and summer weather events, alternating frosts and floods, and vine diseases linked to these climatic conditions, appear to have had a real impact on the 2021 EU wine harvest”, the Commission explains.

With an estimated production of 44.5 million hl (a decrease of 9%), Italy would remain the biggest EU producer, according to these forecasts, followed by Spain (39 million hl, a decrease of 15%) and France (33.3 million hl, a decrease of 27%).

The production of these three Member States, which account for almost 80% of EU production, is estimated at 117 million hectolitres in 2021, a decrease of 23 million hectolitres (a decrease of 17%) compared with their production of 140 million hectolitres in 2020.

France, which has been overtaken by Italy as the EU’s largest wine producer since 2016, would be ranked third (after Spain) for the first time. Germany and Portugal would increase their production by 4 and 1% respectively in 2021.
