13/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 12 October, the European Commission opened a four-week contribution period to finalise its initiative looking at event data recorders (EDR) in road vehicles. In addition to speed, braking force or the deployment of airbags and status of other safety systems in the event of a collision, the Commission intends to add further requirements and to clarify the process during type approval of vehicles. These new requirements include the data that the EDR records, including its format, input and storage of the data. Future devices should allow for a greater “understanding of the circumstances around an accident and the functioning of vehicles”, said the Commission. Regulation 2019/2144 already requires all new vehicles to be fitted with EDRs as of 7 July 2024. See the consultation: https://bit.ly/3oVqaXS (TM)
