European Commission increases spending for 2022 by €1.2 billion

On Tuesday 12 October, the European Commission adopted Letter of Amendment No 1, which represents an increase of €1.24 billion in commitment appropriations and €1.23 billion in payment appropriations on the expenditure side of the draft EU budget for 2022.

Of this total, the 2022 tranche of the ‘Brexit Adjustment Reserve’ is provided for, amounting to €1.3 billion (€1.2 billion in 2018 prices).

The Commission estimates that an amount of €265 million in payment appropriations is needed in 2022 to cover the humanitarian aid actions proposed in 2021 (Syria and Turkey), including the extension of the Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN) programme.

For agricultural expenditure, the surplus requested is €70 million (direct aid).

Finally, the assignment of the revenues from the UK contribution to staff pension expenditure results in savings of €225 million.
