11/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – Continuing its drive to vaccinate 70% of the world against Covid-19 by September 2022, on 11 October the European Commission proposed to amend the EU’s 2021 budget to allocate an additional €450 million to accelerate global vaccination. These funds will make it possible to reach the €1.3 billion needed to secure an additional 200 million doses for low- and middle-income countries through the Covax Facility - a mechanism led by WHO, GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) and CEPI (the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) (see EUROPE 12791/1). The draft amending budget also includes an additional €57.8 million to strengthen the EU’s civil protection mechanism to cover the costs of responding to summer emergencies and disasters, such as repatriation flights from Afghanistan or forest fires in Europe.
