EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Fisheries

European Parliament calls for a new common Mediterranean fisheries strategy for 2021-2025

The European Parliament asked the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) on Tuesday 5 October to propose a new common strategy for fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea for 2021-2025 that is “ambitious and comprehensive, and which must include effective and sustainable management measures at regional and national level, following the MSY (Maximum Sustainable Yield) approach”.

The report by Raffaele Stancanelli (ECR, Italy) on Mediterranean fisheries was adopted in plenary with 582 votes in favour, 5 against and 100 abstentions (see EUROPE 12805/21).

By adopting (387 votes in favour, 282 against and 22 abstentions) part of an amendment proposed by the Greens/EFA group, the Parliament “welcomes the Commission’s proposal, in its 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, to have at least 30% of the sea area in the EU protected, including through establishing fish stock recovery areas, as provided for in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP)”.
