The European Commission decided, on Tuesday 5 October, to appoint Ana Gallego Torres as Director-General of the Directorate General Justice and Consumers.
Ana Gallego Torres, a Spanish national, is currently Director-General for International Legal Cooperation and Human Rights in the Spanish Ministry of Justice. The date of effect will be determined later.
The Commission also appointed Hilde Hardeman as Director-General of the Publications Office. Ms Hardeman, a Belgian national, has 26 years of professional experience in various Commission services, including the Directorates-General for External Relations and Enlargement, as well as the Secretariat-General and the Cabinet. She is currently Director/Head of Service in the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments.
Antti Karhunen, a Finnish national, has been appointed as Director for ‘Sustainable Finance, Investment and Jobs; Economy that works for the People’ at the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA). This DG aims to contribute to sustainable development, the eradication of poverty, peace as well as to the protection of human rights. Mr Karhunen is currently a senior advisor in DG INTPA, where he has focused on trade and development issues and the Green Deal.
Lastly, the Commission has appointed four Principal Legal Advisers in the Legal Service (the Commission’s in-house legal adviser).
Chiara Cattabriga from Italy will be the Principal Legal Adviser for the AGRI (Agriculture and Fisheries) team. Maria Isabel Martínez del Peral Cagigal, a Spanish national, has been appointed as Principal Legal Adviser for the SOC Team (Employment and Social Affairs, Education and Culture, Health and Consumer Protection). Leo Flynn, an Irish national, will be the Principal Legal Adviser for the AIDE (State Aid and Dumping) team. Bernd Martenczuk, a German national, will be the Principal Legal Adviser to the BUDG (Budget, Customs, Taxation) team. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
