06/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament approved by 377 votes to 248 with 62 abstentions the report by Petar Vitanov (S&D, Bulgaria) on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by police and judicial authorities in criminal matters (see EUROPE 12805/20). In particular, MEPs called for a permanent ban on automated recognition of individuals in public spaces, noting that citizens should only be monitored when they are suspected of a crime, a statement said. A message described as “historic” by Greens/EFA MEP Patrick Breyer. To ensure that fundamental rights are respected when these artificial intelligence technologies are used, algorithms should be transparent, traceable and sufficiently documented, say MEPs. The ban on private facial recognition databases was again adopted. Link to text: https://bit.ly/2WMje3z (SP)
