30/08/2021 (Agence Europe) – Geothermal Energy Ltd, a Cornish-based company operating a geothermal power station in the UK, has discovered the highest concentration of lithium ever found in a geothermal reserve, reports the specialist website Euractiv.com in an article published on Monday 30 August. The company behind the discovery plans to extract - in an environmentally friendly manner, it claims - 4,000 tonnes of lithium per year by 2026 from four geothermal sites. In addition, a new ‘gigafactory’ could be built in Cornwall and could revitalise the economy of one of England’s poorest former mining regions. Lithium is one of the raw materials targeted by the European Commission to secure its supply (see EUROPE 12745/18). (PH)
