30/08/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 30 August, the European Commission launched a public consultation – which will remain open until 27 September – on a draft implementing decision regarding the use of sewage sludge in agriculture. The aim of the initiative is to simplify and update reporting by Member States on the implementation of certain EU directives in the waste sector (amendment of Decision 94/741/EC). The Sewage Sludge Directive (86/278/EEC) aims to ensure that using sewage sludge in agriculture as a fertiliser does no harm to the environment, animals or humans. Under the draft decision, there is provision that from 2022 onwards, Member States shall: - collect spatial data on the use of sewage sludge as well as other information; - publish the reports annually, before the end of August of the following year.
