EU continues aid for Port-au-Prince after earthquake

24/08/2021 (Agence Europe)The European Union continues to take action to help Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the country on 14 August, killing more than 1,300 people and injuring nearly 6,000. After releasing EUR 3 million in humanitarian aid on 17 August, the European Commission announced on Thursday 19 August that it had sent twelve European experts and two liaison officers from its Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) to the scene. In addition, several EU Member States have joined the aid operations by offering further support through an EU Civil Protection Mechanism, such as a Technical Assistance and Support Team and shelter tents from Sweden, one water purification module from France, as well as one water treatment plant, medicines, and kitchen kits from Spain. The ERCC continues to monitor the situation closely, in order to adapt assistance offers to requirements. (MF)
