15/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Space Agency (ESA) and the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on Tuesday, 13 July, that they have signed a partnership agreement to pool their expertise in Earth observation in order to better combat climate change. This new partnership aims to strengthen synergy and improve coordination between the two agencies in different scientific programmes and policy areas. This is not the first time that ESA and NASA have worked together on this subject. There are already instances of cooperation, notably not only in the context of the Copernicus programme (with Sentinel-6) but also in the context of field campaigns in the Arctic to validate the CryoSat and ICESat missions. ESA and NASA are currently defining a new mission intended to shed new light on essential processes of the Earth system, such as the water cycle. (PH)
