11/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – The national ambassadors of the Member States to the EU had an informal discussion with Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, on Thursday 10 June, when he briefed them on the situation regarding the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland and the latest state of play with the UK government (see EUROPE 12737/18). On this occasion, they “supported the Commission’s approach”, said one source, which is to continue to seek practical solutions while raising the threat of retaliation if London continues its unilateral actions. According to the Irish news outlet, RTE, the Commission has advocated for a gradual response to London in this discussion, not immediately hitting the UK with new tariffs or quotas nor any new legal action. The Commission did not wish to confirm these points. (SP)
