03/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, strongly condemned on 1 June, the murder of Negai Kidane, Head of Office of the non-governmental organisation CISP (Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli) in Adigrat, Tigray (Ethiopia), and once more emphasised his call for respect of humanitarian law. “I most strongly condemn the killing of a CISP humanitarian colleague in Tigray providing lifesaving assistance to the people affected by the conflict. I recall the obligation under International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for all parties to ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarians”, said the Commissioner. Mr Kidane was accidentally caught in a firefight and died of his injuries on 29 May. (AN)
