07/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – On 7 May, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson was in Turkey to meet with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Minister of the Interior Süleyman Soylu to discuss the 2016 EU-Turkey agreement and its ‘positive’ development. This visit follows Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel’s trip on 6 April. On Twitter, the Commissioner said she had an “open and detailed” meeting with her Turkish counterpart, in a “constructive atmosphere”. The EU would like Turkey to resume returns of asylum seekers who arrived in the EU illegally into its territory, as stipulated in the 2016 Statement. For its part, the Commission is ready to prepare further financial assistance for Turkey to house refugees. (SP)
