07/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – A new report published on Thursday 6 May by the NGO ECOS indicates that the climate impacts associated with fluorinated gases (F-gases) - man-made gases mainly used in the refrigeration, heat pump and air conditioning sectors - are more numerous than those usually taken into account. Even if the new generations of F-gases have a lower global warming potential (GWP) than the old ones, “there are a number of other climate impacts coming from their production and their degradation in the atmosphere”, ECOS points out. The NGO mentions various activities that it believes give rise to emissions: chemical feedstocks, heating and cooling during the manufacturing process of refrigerants, etc. ECOS therefore calls on the Commission to “promote a change towards natural and non-fluorinated alternatives, such as hydrocarbons”.
