On Wednesday 28 April, the European Commission launched a public consultation to update the 1991 Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC).
The revision proposal is expected in the first quarter of 2022 to strengthen the legislation and adapt it to new challenges.
It will take into account the evaluation of this directive which, in 2019, showed that it was generally working well, but that there were also some shortcomings and new societal needs.
This will include addressing emerging challenges (contaminants of concern, wastewater monitoring in the context of pandemics) and aligning legislation with the EU’s new environmental and climate ambitions (nutrient recovery, energy efficiency and production), in line with the European Green Deal.
All stakeholders and interested parties are invited to give their feedback on possible improvements to the Directive. The online consultation is open until 21 July, midnight Brussels time.
