23/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – In response to a request from the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published on 22 April a scientific opinion to help food suppliers decide what information to provide to consumers on food preservation and consumption times. More specifically, it is intended to help food business operators decide when to mark their products with a “use by” or “best before” date in the context of the application of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. This opinion has been prepared on the basis of a risk-based approach. For products where the opening of the package can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria, this tool indicates that the consumption period is shorter than the original expiry date. The notice also contains advice on good practice for defrosting food safely. (AN)
