23/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – In response to increasing humanitarian needs in the Horn of Africa, the Commission announced on 23 April 149 million euros in emergency aid for vulnerable populations in the region. The funds will finance humanitarian projects in Somalia (42.5 million euros), Djibouti (500,000 euros), Kenya (14 million euros), Sudan (52 million euros) and Uganda (32 million euros). Eight million euros is being allocated to efforts to combat the locust infestation. The EU had already announced 53.7 million euros in aid for Ethiopia and 43.5 million euros for South Sudan during the recent visit of European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič to these countries. Of the total humanitarian aid package for the region, approximately 30 million euros will fund education projects for children in emergency situations. (AN)
