After Idriss Déby’s death, EU calls for a rapid return to constitutional order

21/04/2021 (Agence Europe)Reacting, on Tuesday 20 April, to the death of Chadian President Idriss Déby, the EU called for a limited transition. “The European Union expresses its commitment to the stability and territorial integrity of Chad and calls on all concerned to exercise restraint. It stresses the importance of a rapid return to constitutional order. The transition announced must be limited, take place in a peaceful manner, respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, and allow for the organisation of new inclusive elections”, said the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on behalf of the EU27. “The Republic of Chad has just lost, in Idriss Déby Itno, a historic political figure, whose efforts in favour of regional security, in particular in the fight against terrorism, have been lasting and solid”, he stressed.
