21/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The EU has mobilised €1 million in emergency aid for people affected by Covid-19 in Papua New Guinea, the European Commission announced on 21 April. The ACP country, an EU partner, experienced an outbreak of cases last month that overwhelmed the capacity of the health system, the institution said in a statement. The funding will enable the International Committee of the Red Cross to carry out a six-month intervention focusing on increasing the treatment capacity of the public health system, supporting local health authorities and assisting with vaccination campaigns. The funds come from the Emergency Epidemic Tool, which allows the EU to provide rapid funding in the event of an outbreak. (AN)
