Brussels, 14/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – MEP Chrysoula Zacharopoulou (Renew Europe, France), Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development and rapporteur in the European Parliament for the future EU-Africa strategy, is the Co-Chair of the Covax Facility Shareholders Council, led by WHO, GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations). The EU candidate, who is a medical doctor and has already been involved in Covid-19 vaccination in Africa, was officially selected on 14 April to represent high-income countries in this global mechanism to ensure universal and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines (see EUROPE 12682/18). The Colombian Minister of Health, Don Fernando Ruiz, is the Co-Chair representing the upper middle income countries. The consensus selection was made online. The EU is supporting Covax with €2.2 billion. (AN)
