The European Commission decided, on Wednesday 14 April, to appoint Mechthild Wörsdörfer as Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Energy (ENER). The date of effect of this appointment will be determined at a later date.
Ms Wörsdörfer, a German national, will be responsible for coordinating the transition to fair and clean energy and for international affairs. Since 2018, she has been Director for ‘Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks’ at the International Energy Agency in Paris. Ms Wörsdörfer was previously Director in DG ENER, in charge of renewables, research and innovation and energy efficiency.
DG Trade. Maria Martin-Prat de Abreu has been appointed Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Trade (TRADE).
The date of effect of this appointment will be determined at a later date.
Ms Martin-Prat de Abreu, a Spanish national, is currently a Director in the Commission's Directorate-General for Trade. In particular, she is the Commission’s Chief Negotiator for the negotiations with China on a bilateral investment agreement.
The Commission has also appointed French national Doriane Givord-Strassel as Director of the Directorate ‘European Networks, Digital, Justice, Home Affairs, Migration and Border Management, Security, Values in the Internal Audit Service (IAS)’ and Italian Alberto Bacchiega as Director of the Directorate for ‘Markets and cases III: Financial Services’ in the Directorate-General for Competition (COMP), as of 16 April.
In addition, the Commission has appointed Manuel Szapiro as the new Head of its regional office in Barcelona, Spain. The date of effect is to be set later.
A French national, Mr Szapiro is currently deputy Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič. He is responsible in particular, for relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, interinstitutional relations, strategic programming and foresight.
