08/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will present a proposal for a Regulation on EU population statistics in early 2022 to update the current legal framework in this area. On Wednesday 7 April, the institution published its roadmap - open for comments until 5 May - and detailed the changes it envisages. The new Regulation should, it explains, ensure that users of these statistics will in future have more information on migration-related topics, more frequent data and smaller areas. It should also allow for better use of data from administrative sources and bring more coherence. “Current population statistics are based on several legal acts that were not designed jointly”, the Commission says. It also recalls that the current regulation on European population statistics (1260/2013) will cease to apply in 2028. (AC)
