The market shares of the largest electricity and gas producers in the European Union have followed a downward trend between 2007 and 2019, according to figures published on Tuesday 23 March by Eurostat.
For the electricity market, this concerns the majority of Member States, with significant differences between countries.
The market share of the largest producer on the electricity market has decreased by 62.6% in Malta, but by only 1% in Hungary. However, it remained stable in Cyprus, a country where a single producer has a 100% market share, while it increased in Romania and Latvia (by 4.3% and 0.3% respectively).
In 2019, the market share of the largest electricity producer was below 20% in three Member States: Luxembourg (18%), Finland (16%) and Poland (12%).
For the gas market, the market share of the largest natural gas importing and producing company decreased in 13 Member States between 2007 and 2019. At the same time, this share remained stable in Finland and Sweden (at 100%), while it increased in Ireland (+1.8%), Lithuania (+19%) and Estonia (+21%).
In the latter country, it was 100% in 2019, compared to 30% and 31% respectively in Ireland and Belgium.
