09/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – On 9 March, the European Parliament announced that, on International Women’s Day, the Bureau of the European Parliament approved the proposal to rename two of its buildings in Brussels in honour of eminent European women. The building at 63 rue Montoyer will be renamed the Clara Campoamor building, in tribute to the Spanish lawyer and politician who, among other causes, worked for women’s rights and gender non-discrimination. The building at 30-50 rue Wiertz will now be called the Sophie Scholl building after the German student who, as a member of ‘the White Rose’, the non-violent anti-Nazi resistance group, was executed for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. The Bureau also decided to rename meeting room 1G2 in the Spinelli building after the former Greek MEP Manólis Glezos, who fought in the national resistance movement against fascism. (CG)
