EU extends targeted sanctions for another year

26/02/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 25 February, the Council of the EU decided to extend the assets freeze and visa ban against 88 people deemed responsible for the violent repression and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators, opposition members and journalists in Belarus and electoral fraud. This has been extended for another year until 28 February 2022. It also decided to freeze the assets of seven entities (see EUROPE 12625/12). Also, individuals and entities from the EU are prohibited from making funds available to listed persons, either directly or indirectly. On Monday 22 February, at the end of the Foreign Affairs Council, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, warned that the European Union would consider adopting new sanctions due to the continued repression and harassment of the population.
