25/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – The spokesman for the European External Action Service called on all those involved, on Thursday 25 February, to remain calm and to avoid any rhetoric or action that could lead to a new escalation in Armenia. Earlier in the day, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had denounced an attempted coup after the General Staff had called for his resignation. “Political differences must be resolved peacefully and in strict adherence to the principles and processes of parliamentary democracy”, the spokesperson stressed. He recalled that, according to the Armenian Constitution, the armed forces “shall maintain neutrality in political matters and shall be under civilian control. Maintaining the democratic and constitutional order is the only way Armenia can effectively tackle the challenges it is confronted with”, said the spokesperson. (CG)
