09/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – The ban “seals the fate of [Klubràdio], Hungary’s last independent radio station”, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, said in a tweet published on Tuesday 9 February, after an appeal against a ban on broadcasting beyond 14 February was upheld. “Another sad day for media freedom”, she writes. The refusal to extend the licence of Klubràdio—decided by the Media Council in September—was based on an administrative delay. After being rejected today by the Budapest City Court, Klubràdio announced an appeal to the Supreme Court. Its fight is part of a process of putting pressure on the Hungarian media that began after Viktor Orbán’s return to power in 2010 and is part of the exceptional procedure triggered for serious violations of the European Union’s values in 2018.
