European Commission approves two new geographical indications from France and Croatia

04/02/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 4 February, the European Commission announced that it has approved the applications for inclusion of ‘Huile de noix du Périgord’ (Périgord walnut oil) from France on the protected designations of origin (PDO) register and ‘Rudarska greblica’ from Croatia on the protected geographical indications (PGI) register. Périgord walnut oil is a first-pressed virgin oil that is obtained solely using a mechanical process. Rudarska greblica is a product made from a thin paste that is shaped by hand, then cooked and topped with fresh cheese made from cow’s milk. Ground walnuts, spinach, chard, nettles, leeks, mint and grated yellow carrots can be added to the cheese. This geographical indication has become the ‘trademark’ of the town of Rude. The new designations will join 1,507 food products that are already protected at EU level. (LC)
