European Parliament committee recommends ratification of agreement on future relationship between EU and United Kingdom

The European Parliament’s Committee on Transport (TRAN) has called on the Committees on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and International Trade (INTA) to endorse the agreement on the future relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom.

A letter to this effect, addressed to the Chairs of the AFET and INTA Committees, was approved by the MEPs of the TRAN Committee on Tuesday 26 January by 37 votes to 12.

No objections, therefore, in the field of transport, just a few recommendations and reminders.

The commission stresses that “the EU must remain vigilant about the fact that the UK has not committed itself to the dynamic alignment of its rules on several policy areas”, including transport.

It also welcomes the continued cooperation between the EU and the UK in the framework of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Echoing the fears expressed on reading the agreement in the TRAN Committee, the letter welcomes, finally, the creation of specialised committees in the field of road and air transport and air safety, with the aim of monitoring and examining the implementation of the agreement.

Like the TRAN Committee, the various committees surveyed have until Thursday 4 February to formulate their opinions.
