27/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 27 January, the Sports Ministers of the 27 EU Member States called for human rights to be guaranteed in sport and major sporting events, both inside and outside the European Union. In a letter addressed to Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, the ministers reiterated the November 2013 declaration in which their predecessors called on states organising major sports events to respect their international human rights commitments. “We would like to call on the Commission, within the EU’s respective areas of competence, to commit itself to identifying an appropriate policy approach to this important issue”, they stress. The International Ice Hockey Federation and the International Union of Modern Pentathlon have decided to withdraw the organisation of their respective world championships from Belarus, scheduled for this spring.
