21/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Monday 21 December a €23 million package for Member States and religious communities to enhance the protection of places of worship and other public spaces against terrorist threats. This support was announced in the Action Plan against Terrorism presented on 9 December (see EUROPE 12619/14). Ten projects will be financed by the Internal Security Fund, says the Commission in a press release. Nine projects will focus on the protection of places of worship belonging to different religious communities (churches, synagogues, mosques), the protection of other types of public spaces such as public transport systems and major sports venues and the detection of threats by detector dogs. A final project, worth €3 million, will be used to test solutions to counter the possible threats posed by drones. (SP)
