Four MEPs from Five Star Movement expected to join Greens/EFA group

Four Italian MEPs, Ignazio Corrao, Rosa d'Amato, Eleonora Evi and Piernicola Pedicini, who resigned on 3 December from the ‘Five Star Movement’ (M5S), are expected to join the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, according to a European source and documents obtained by EUROPE.

These MEPs, currently non-attached, call themselves “the pro-environment fringe of the Five Star Movement’s delegation to the European Parliament”. In an explanatory note on their departure from the M5S, they specify that their programme for the European elections in May 2019 placed the fight against the climate crisis and the protection of human health and the environment at the heart of its concerns.

The MEPs explained that during the current legislature they had voted in favour of the environmental cause “for which they were mandated”, often in “open dissent” with the rest of the ‘Five-Star’ delegation, “which had decided to review its traditional pro-environmental positions to align itself more closely with the mainstream and all kinds of lobbies”.

The Greens/EFA group could vote on these inclusions on Wednesday 9 December, but, according to a European source, this should be a formality.

With the addition of these four members, the group will have 73 members”. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
