EU concerned about passing of legislation on limitation of presidential powers

Brussels, 04/12/2020 (Agence Europe)On Friday 4 December, the spokesman for the European External Action Service denounced the adoption by the Moldovan Parliament the day before of several legislative proposals, notably on limitations on presidential powers, “tabled in a hasty and non-transparent manner”. These proposals were tabled only two weeks after the election of the new president, Maia Sandu. “The voting took place in a way that fails to respect the necessary parliamentary procedures” the spokesman criticized. Pointing out that the vote had been supported by people identified as having been involved in corruption and in the 2014 banking fraud, he said the vote “also carries the risk that the legislation might serve vested interests”. The spokesman added that any changes to the Presidential functions and powers must respect the necessary, legally-enshrined procedures, including democratic scrutiny. (CG)
