04/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, decided, on Friday 4 December, to appoint Stefano Sannino as Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EEAS announced. This decision will enter into force on 1 January 2021. Mr Sannino, an Italian national, has been Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS for Economic and Global Issues since February 2020. Previously, he was Italy’s Permanent Representative to the EU and Director General of DG Enlargement at the European Commission. He will replace Helga Schmid, who will become Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) (see separate news item) and who has been in this post since 1 September 2016.
