The European Cross-Border Citizens Alliance was officially announced at the 1st Borders Forum, a two-day event on 9-10 November. In essence, this Alliance, in which the European Committee of the Regions participates, calls, among other things, for greater consideration of the regions in European policies and the legislative process.
Christian Dupessey, President of the Transfrontier Operational Mission (MOT), which is co-organising the event, hopes that this Alliance will send a message to both national and European authorities, “so that they strengthen their support and place cross-border territories at the heart of their action”.
The Alliance advocates first of all that border regions be better taken into account in the EU’s political and legislative arrangements, in particular in the Conference on the Future of Europe. It considers that border authorities should have “appropriate” powers and “specific” resources and accelerated procedures, particularly in the light of the Covid-19 health crisis affecting Europe and the world. Furthermore, they call for the resumption and conclusion of the negotiations on the Regulation on the European cross-border mechanism (see EUROPE 12195/23).
