The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published on Tuesday 3 November an assessment on the welfare of cattle during the different stages of slaughter.
EU experts analysed the conditions of arrival, stunning and bleeding of the animals. They identified 40 animal welfare hazards, mainly during stunning and bleeding.
Thirty-nine of these risks are related to a lack of training or fatigue of the personnel responsible for slaughter.
