EU does not recognise Russian local elections in Sevastopol

14/09/2020 (Agence Europe)On Monday 14 September, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service reaffirmed that the EU did not recognise the elections for the post of governor held in Sevastopol the previous day as part of regional and local elections being held in the Russian Federation. “The European Union has not recognised the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore does not recognise the holding of elections in the Crimean peninsula”, the spokesperson said in a statement. He added therefore that “anybody elected in Russia-organised voting in the Crimean peninsula claiming to ‘represent’ Crimea and Sevastopol will not be recognised by the EU as representatives of those territories, which are part of Ukraine”. Mikhail Razvozhayev, who was elected as governor with 85.72% of the votes, is already subject to sanctions by the EU. (CG)
