14/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 14 September, the health ministers of the 53 Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s European region approved their work programme for the next 5 years. The work programme is based on three priorities: (1) guaranteeing the right to universal access to high quality care without fear of financial hardship; (2) preventing and responding to health emergencies; (3) building healthy communities where public health actions and appropriate public policies guarantee a better life in an economy based on well-being. It also identifies immunisation, digital health, mental health and behavioural knowledge as four drivers of change. In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the WHO Regional Director, Hans Kluge, and the European Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, have both stressed the need for solidarity and the value of multilateralism.
