EU prepares for UN ‘Leaders Commitment for Nature’ summit

United to reverse the loss of biodiversity for sustainable development” is the headline commitment to nature that world leaders will soon be making, a commitment for which the European Union is preparing.

The draft text, examined by the EU Council working group and seen by EUROPE, was approved by videoconference on Thursday 10 September and will be followed by a silence procedure to enable the Council bodies to finalise it with a view to its adoption.

This non-binding instrument containing political targets will be agreed at the Leaders for Nature and People event on 28 September 2020 (by videoconference), organised alongside the UN Biodiversity Summit (30 September), also taking place virtually.

The text confirms the leaders’ commitment to take all necessary actions to meet the UN vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.

It underlines the seriousness of the biodiversity crisis, accelerated and exacerbated by climate change, and recognises that the crisis requires a deep re-commitment by world leaders to take urgent action to achieve sustainable development and put nature and biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030.
