Electricity consumption in EU remains low despite lifting of containment measures

Although many Member States have partially lifted the containment measures and other restrictions imposed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, total electricity consumption in the European Union in June 2020 remained 7.6% below the lowest value recorded in June between 2016 and 2019, according to the latest data published on Monday 7 September by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office.

The fall in electricity consumption was particularly significant in Greece, Spain, Croatia, Poland, Slovenia and Cyprus, where it fell by more than 10% from the lowest level since 2016 recorded for the month of June.

For Eurostat, this is because tourism is an important sector for the majority of these countries. The reduction in the number of tourists due to travel restrictions, travel warnings and quarantine measures imposed by some countries has thus probably led to a reduction in electricity consumption.

Seven Member States (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, Portugal and Finland) recorded a reduction in electricity consumption of between 5 and 10%, while for eight Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania and Slovakia) the decrease was between 1 and 5%.

On the other hand, the situation remained stable (up to +1%) in Latvia and Lithuania, while Estonia, Ireland, Malta and Sweden reported an increase in electricity consumption from June's low point.
