Draft European Medicines Agencies Network strategy welcomed by pharmaceutical industry

The pharmaceutical industry is pleased with the draft European Medicines Agencies Network strategy for the 2020–2025 period. However, in a press release issued on 8 September, the network suggests a series of improvements, such as redesigning the product support mechanism, which should be more iterative and flexible.

The draft strategy was published on the European Medicines Agency (EMA) website in early July. It is intended to serve as a guide for the European Medicines Agencies Network, which notably includes the national authorities of the EU-27 as well as those of Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

The document defines six strategic focus areas: availability and accessibility of medicines; data analytics; digital tools and digital transformation; innovation, antimicrobial resistance, and other emerging health threats; supply chain challenges; and network sustainability and operational excellence.

It specifies that the strategy will be aligned with the broader Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe, which is being developed by the European Commission.

The final strategy is scheduled to be published in November 2020.
